Are You a Good Client?
Most people set out to hire a good agent, but did you know that many agents set out to find good clients? That’s right! Some of us are as concerned about who we work with as you are. We’re not interested in selling as many homes as possible and working with just about anybody to do that. We’re selective. The fit has to be right for both you and us if things are going to work out as well as possible.
A client recently emailed this message to me:”Michael…we say this time and time again…..you’re an amazing agent…..I’m sure you get that all the time but you really knock it out of the park on all aspects and we are honored to have you as our agent.” Apparently, they’re happy with me and I’m just as happy with them. We’re a good fit. What makes us a good fit? Well, you’d have to ask them directly for details as to how exactly I’m knocking it “out of the park on all aspects”, but I can tell you some of the reasons I think they’re good clients. They appreciate that a great agent will make a world of difference to their outcome. As a professional, the personal satisfaction from a job well done is more important to me than any other form of compensation. They respect my opinion. They’re intelligent people who are looking for the information and advice they need to make good decisions. They’re punctual and polite. They don’t waste my time, or theirs, doing things that won’t get them closer to their goal. They say please and thank you. They’re serious about moving. Not desperate. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, as long as they’re serious. They’re realistic. They don’t expect to be able to buy a $2 million home for $1 million and they don’t expect to sell their home for twice its fair market value. They provide me with positive reinforcement when I do something right. This makes me want to work even harder for them. They have an exceptionally cute little boy who I like seeing and who likes seeing me (maybe he’ll be a client some day).
These are some of the things I look for in clients. Other agents may be looking for other things. One of the beautiful things about this business is that there are so many agents from which to choose, there’s almost certainly one who’s the best fit for you. Best thing to do before you hire an agent is to sit down and think about what you want from your agent, then go find yourself an agent that meets that profile. Chances are, that agent is looking for clients with your profile, too, and you’ll be a match made in heaven!
